Boat, Trailer, Camping Gear: Is Your Weekend Setup Ready?

After sitting unused over winter, your boat, trailer and camping gear might need more attention than you think. Before the first weekend away, it's worth checking the whole setup, not just the vehicle.

    Start With the Trailer

Give your trailer a proper once-over before you hook up.

    • Tyres: Look for cracking, bulges, flat spots and uneven wear.
    • Brakes: Check they operate properly and aren't showing signs of corrosion.
    • Lights: Test brake lights, indicators and electrical connections.
    • Coupling & safety chains: Check for rust, damage and secure operation.
    • Towball & towbar: Make sure everything is secure and in good condition.

    Don't Forget Everything You're Carrying

It's not just the trailer that adds weight. Once you add passengers, luggage, fishing gear, camping equipment, fridges and other weekend essentials, your vehicle can be carrying a lot more than usual.

    • Check how much your vehicle can safely carry.
    • Remember that towball weight counts towards the vehicle's load.
    • Don't forget accessories, tools and recovery equipment.

The more you pack, the more important it is to know your vehicle's limits.

What Has Been Sitting in the Shed?

    • Camping gear: Check tents, sleeping bags and air mattresses for mould, damage or leaks.
    • Fridges and batteries: Test that they're still working and holding charge.
    • Fishing gear: Check rods, reels and tackle before packing them.
    • Recovery equipment: Inspect straps, shackles and other gear for wear or damage.

    Don't Forget the Saltwater

If your boat or trailer has been around saltwater, corrosion deserves a closer look. Pay particular attention to electrical connections, brakes, bearings, couplings and other exposed components.

A freshwater rinse after use can help, but don't ignore visible corrosion or anything that isn't operating properly.

    Before the First Trip

Before loading the family and heading off, do a quick test run.

    • Hook up the trailer and check the lights.
    • Check the coupling and safety chains.
    • Check tyre pressures, including the spare.
    • Make sure the load is secure.
    • Take the vehicle and trailer for a short drive.

Finding a problem at home is a lot easier than finding it at the boat ramp.
