How to Prep Your Car for Long Drives

Whether you’re heading north to the Whitsundays or west to the Outback looking for dinosaurs, a long drive in Queensland can be demanding on your vehicle and your patience. Before you load up the snacks, follow this essential prep guide to ensure your road trip is memorable for the right reasons.

    The "Big Five" Mechanical Check

    1. Tyres (Including the Spare!): Check your tread depth and adjust your pressure. Queensland roads can get hot, and under-inflated tyres are prone to blowouts. Don't forget to check that your spare is actually inflated!
    2. Fluids & Oils: Ensure your engine oil, coolant, and brake fluids are topped up. Long highway stretches at 100km/h put your cooling system to the test.
    3. Battery Health: Heat is the number one killer of batteries in QLD. If your car has been struggling to start on chilly autumn mornings, it’s time for a test.
    4. Wiper Blades & Washers: Tropical afternoon storms can hit without warning. If your blades are squeaking or streaking, replace them before you leave.
    5. Air Conditioning: Even in autumn, the QLD sun is still harsh. Make sure your AC is blowing ice-cold to keep the cabin comfortable.

Prepping the "Command Centre" (The Interior)

A messy car makes for a stressful drive. Take 20 minutes to prep the cabin before you hit the Bruce Highway:

    • The Deep Clean: Vacuum out the crumbs and wipe down the dashboard. A clean windshield (inside and out) reduces glare and eye strain during those long sunset drives.
    • Organise Your Tech: Ensure your maps are updated and your phone is synced to the Bluetooth. Check that your USB charging ports are working, there’s nothing worse than a dead phone when you’re trying to find a campsite.
    • Sun Protection: In QLD, the sun streaming through the side windows can be brutal. Invest in some high-quality window tints or sunshades for the kids in the back.

Prepping the People (Comfort is Key)

Your car is ready, but are the passengers? A little bit of foresight goes a long way in preventing the "are we there yet?" blues.

    • The Hydration Station: Pack a small car fridge or an insulated cooler bag. Staying hydrated keeps the driver alert and the passengers happy.
    • Ergonomics: If you’re prone to a sore back, consider a lumbar support cushion. Encourage passengers to bring travel pillows for those inevitable highway naps.
    • The "Survival" Kit: Keep a small bag in the front seat with hand sanitiser, wet wipes, tissues, and a few spare rubbish bags.
    • Entertainment: Pre-download your favourite podcasts or Spotify playlists. If you're heading into the Outback, remember that mobile reception can be spotty, so offline mode will be your best friend!
