Brisbane Storm Season: 3 Survival Hacks Every Local Driver Needs

We’ve all seen the sky turn that eerie shade of "hail green" over Mt Coot-tha. While we’ve been told to have our insurance up to date, it's always good to know what to do in the 15 minutes before the rain hits can save you the headache of an insurance claim altogether.

Here is how to play defence during a South East Queensland supercell.

    1. Master the "Hail Radar" (It’s not just for rain)

Most of us check the BOM radar and see "red" or "yellow" and think "heavy rain." But for a car owner, the real danger is in the shape and speed of the cells.

    • Look for the "Hook: If you see a rain cell on the radar that looks like it has a little hook or a very sharp, defined "core" (often appearing black or dark purple), that’s a high-probability hail indicator.
    • The "Splitter": If you see one big storm split into two, the "left-mover" is often the one that carries the most dangerous hail.
    • Speed is Key: If the cell is moving at 60km/h or faster, you have very little time to find cover. If you aren't under a roof when it's 10km away, stay put.

    2. The "Emergency Undercover" Strategy (Without a Garage)

If you’re caught at work or out shopping in Brisbane when the sirens go off, you need a plan that doesn't involve parking under a bridge (which is dangerous).

    • The Shopping Centre "Safe Haven": Knowing which local centres have multi-story undercover parking (like Westfield Chermside, Carindale, or Indooroopilly) is your best bet. Even paying for two hours of parking is cheaper than a $500 insurance excess.
    • The Floor Mat Trick: If you are stuck in the open and hail starts, grab your rubber floor mats and place them over the center of your windshield. It won't save your panels, but it may prevent the glass from shattering, allowing you to actually drive the car home safely after the storm.
    • Avoid the "Tree Trap": It’s tempting to park under a big Poinciana for "cover," but in a SEQ storm, falling branches and "widow-makers" do more damage than the hail itself.

    3. The "Silent Killer": Clearing Your Drainage Scuppers

Insurance covers hail dents, but they often won't cover flood damage caused by "poor maintenance."

    • What are Scuppers? These are the small drainage holes located at the base of your windshield (under the plastic cowl) and inside your sunroof tracks.
    • The Storm Season Clog: In Brisbane, these get filled with dried Lilly Pilly berries and leaves. When a tropical downpour hits, the water can't drain out, so it backs up and flows into your dashboard electronics or onto your carpets.
    • The 5-Minute Fix: Before November hits, open your bonnet and manually clear out any leaf litter from the corners near the hinges. If you have a sunroof, check that the "tracks" are clear of grit.

Ultimately, the best way to survive storm season is to stay one step ahead of the clouds. While we can’t control the Brisbane weather, we can help you ensure your car is in the best possible shape to handle it.
