How to Maximize Your Tax Deductions with Your Car Expenses for the 2025                                                       Financial Year

For many Australians, our car is more than just a way to get around; it's a tool that helps us earn our living. If you use your personal vehicle for work-related activities, you're likely missing out on valuable tax deductions if you're not claiming your car expenses correctly. As the 2025 financial year progresses, now is the ideal time to get smart about what you can claim to help boost your tax refund.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) allows you to claim a deduction for expenses you incur when you use your own car for work. The golden rule is that the travel must be directly connected to earning your income. This generally means your usual trip between home and work isn't deductible, but many other work-related journeys are. Think about trips like:

    • Travelling between different work locations for the same job.
    • Driving to client sites, meetings, or external training sessions.
    • Using your car as a base for your work, like a mobile tradie or sales professional.
    • Transporting bulky tools or equipment that your employer doesn't provide secure storage for at work.

Two Paths to Claiming Car Expenses for individuals

The ATO offers two main methods for calculating your car expense deductions, each with its own advantages:

Cents Per Kilometre Method: This is the simplest way to claim. For the 2024-25 financial year, you can claim 88 cents for every work-related kilometre you travel, up to a maximum of 5,000 kilometres per car. This rate covers all your car's running costs, including fuel, maintenance, registration, and depreciation. The best part? You don't need to keep all your individual receipts for these expenses. You just need to show how you calculated your work-related kilometres – a simple diary or app is perfect for this.

Logbook Method: If you drive a significant amount for work, this method generally allows for a larger deduction. It involves keeping a logbook for a continuous 12-week period that truly reflects your typical work travel. This logbook helps you work out the percentage of your car's use that is work-related. Once you have this percentage, you apply it to all your actual car expenses for the entire financial year. This means you can claim a portion of:

    • Fuel and oil
    • Registration and insurance
    • Repairs and servicing
    • Interest on a car loan
    • Lease payments
    • Decline in value (depreciation) of the car if you own it
    • Other direct running costs

Smart Strategies for Maximizing Your Deduction

    • Record Everything: No matter which method you choose, consistent and accurate record-keeping is your greatest asset. For the cents per kilometre method, track your work trips. For the logbook method, keep that detailed logbook and hold onto all your car-related receipts.
    • Pick the Right Method for You: If you're a heavy work driver, putting in the effort for the logbook method will likely result in a much larger tax benefit. If your work travel is occasional and less than 5,000 km, the cents per kilometre method offers simplicity.
    • Don't Forget the "Extras": Beyond the primary running costs, remember to include work-related parking fees and tolls in your claims if you're using the logbook method.
    • No Double Dipping: You generally can't claim car expenses if your employer has already paid for them or if your car is part of a salary packaging or novated lease arrangement.
    • When in Doubt, Seek Advice: Tax rules can be complex and sometimes change. If you have significant car expenses or are unsure about what applies to your unique situation, speaking with a registered tax professional is always a wise move.

By understanding these options and staying diligent with your records, you can confidently navigate your car expense deductions and put more money back in your pocket this tax time. Drive smart, claim smart!
