⛈️ Protect Your Wheels: Your Guide to Looking After Your Car in Queensland's Wild Weather

Living in the Sunshine State has its perks, but Queensland's weather can be anything but sunny, especially during storm and cyclone season. From torrential downpours and flash flooding to damaging hail and high winds, our cars often face a serious battle with the elements. Here are four tips,

    1. Preparation is Key: The Pre-Storm Checklist

Don't wait until the thunder rolls. A few simple checks can dramatically reduce your risk of damage and breakdown.

    • Tyres, Tyres, Tyres! Good tread is vital for wet weather grip. Check your tyres have at least the legal minimum tread depth (1.5mm) across the entire width. Low tread increases your risk of aquaplaning (when a layer of water separates your tyres from the road).
    • Wiper Check: Make sure your wiper blades are in excellent condition and don't smear. You'll need maximum visibility when the rain is pouring down.
    • Lights On: Check that all your headlights, taillights, and indicators are working perfectly. This is crucial for seeing and being seen in low visibility conditions.
    • Insurance Review: Confirm that your car insurance policy is up-to-date and adequately covers you for major weather events like storms, hail, and flood damage. Keep digital and printed copies of your policy easily accessible.
    • Emergency Kit: Always keep a basic emergency kit in your car. Include items like a working torch, a first-aid kit, a blanket, water, non-perishable snacks, and an external battery bank to keep your phone charged.

    3. Driving Safely in Heavy Rain and Floods

This is where preparation meets caution. Queensland road rules are clear: your safety and the safety of others comes first.

Slow Down and Double Your Distance

    • Reduce Speed: Wet roads mean significantly longer braking distances. Slow down to stay in control and minimise the risk of aquaplaning.
    • Increase Gap: Double the distance you keep between your car and the one in front of you, aim for at least a four-second gap. This gives you much-needed time to react and stop smoothly.
    • Use Low Beams: Turn on your headlights (low beam) in heavy rain, even during the day. This helps other drivers see you. Never use high beams in heavy rain or fog, as the light reflects back, reducing your visibility.

The Golden Rule: If It’s Flooded, Forget It!

This advice is non-negotiable. Floodwaters are the single biggest danger to drivers during a Queensland storm.

    • Don't Risk It: Even shallow, fast-flowing water can wash your car away. Just 15cm of flowing water can cause a small car to float and lose steering control.
    • Hidden Dangers: You can't see what's under the water, the road surface may be washed away, or hidden debris could severely damage your vehicle.
    • Stalled Car: If your engine stalls in water, do not attempt to restart it. This can cause major, irreparable damage to the engine (known as "hydro-locking").

    2. Hail & Wind: Protecting Your Parked Car

Hail damage is a massive issue in Queensland, often resulting in expensive panel and glass repairs.

    • Park Under Cover: Your garage is your car’s best friend during a storm. If you don't have one, use a solid carport or the lowest level of a secure, covered parking facility (like a shopping centre carpark).
    • Avoid Hazards: When parking outside, ensure your vehicle is away from trees (falling branches) and power lines. Strong winds can turn loose items into damaging projectiles, so also try to avoid fences and unsecured objects.
    • DIY Hail Protection: If you get caught out, you can protect your glass and roof by firmly securing heavy blankets, floor mats, or towels to your car's exterior.

    4. After the Storm: Checking for Damage

Once the wild weather has passed, take a moment to safely check your vehicle before driving.

    • Visual Inspection: Look for dents, scratches, cracked glass, or signs of water entry. Take photos immediately for any insurance claims.
    • Water Check: If your car was parked in a flooded area, do not start the engine. Have it professionally towed and inspected. Water damage to modern vehicle electronics can be catastrophic.
    • Listen and Look: Drive slowly and listen for any unusual noises. Test your brakes lightly and make sure all your lights and electronics are working correctly.

Stay safe out there, Queensland! A little preparation goes a long way to keeping you and your Big Box Car in top shape, no matter what the weather throws at us.
